Clarkson (Clarkston, Clarksen)

The First Known Generation

·  ROBERT C. CLARKSON b. ca. 1815 in Tennessee. Married Irene WATTERS

Our earliest known CLARKSON in our family tree is Robert CLARKSON, born Tennessee in about 1810. There were no CLARKSON’s in the 1810 Tennessee census, but the census records are very thin. Other records show a Aquilla CLARKSON and a Francis YOUNG in Eastern TN as early as 1800. There was also a James CLARKSON and his wife Mary CAMPBELL. Finally there was a James Lee CLARKSON (Clarkston) and his wife Sally COOK. James Lee was the son of George Middleton CLARKSON, the first man convicted of murder and hung in what was to become Tennessee (It was the proposed State of Franklin then).  There were 3-4 groups of CLARKSON’s in Kentucky, and there were 5-6 groups of CLARKSON’s in Virginia. The 1820 census also found no CLARKSON’s in TN. Nothing is known of his father or mother. By 1835 ROBERT CLARKSON is in Perry County, Alabama, where he marries Irene WATTERS. There is extensive information on the WATTERS available on this site. By the late1840’s, it appears that Robert CLARKSON has died. The 1850 Mississippi census has his wife IRENE WATTERS in Panola County, Mississippi with her 4 CLARKSON children. She went to Panola County because her brother James and wife Nancy (WRIGHT) were already living there. She met and married a Benjamin Bynum.

·  GEORGE ROBERT CLARKSON  b. 1938 in Perry County AL, Married MARCELLA ELIZABETH GREENLEE

·  Thomas CLARKSON, b. approx.1841 Later he settled in Arkansas, and is in 1880 census there. His name is spelled Clarksen in that census.

·  Elizabeth CLARKSON, b. approx. 1839. Fate unknown

·  Nancy CLARKSON, b. approx. 1841. Fate unknown

·  Joseph M. CLARKSON? b. 1844 Is this the Joseph living in Pope, Panola Co. MS nearby where George R. was in 1860. But the census states that he was born in Mississippi. If this is the case, then Joseph may be a cousin to Robert. Joseph is living with the Cormich (sp) family. ROBERT CLARKSON and IRENE WATTERS may have moved to MS by 1844, and that may be why Joseph was born in MS. If not, ROBERT had a brother settle there, but is dead or gone.  

Her oldest boy is George Robert CLARKSON. He marries Marcella Elizabeth GREENLEE in about 1860. During the Civil war, he serves with the 42nd Mississippi Regiment, which fights battles at Gettysburg, Wilderness, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. He is not with his regiment when it surrenders at Appomattox. George Robert & Marcella’s children are:

Charles Wright Clarkson married Lillie Smith in 1898 in Teasdale, Mississippi. By the 1910’s, they joined the Church of LDS and moved to Utah.
